Thanks so much for your unwavering support – we are now starting to gain support from across the nation, as students from other universities acknowledge that this tuition fee increase will affect us all. Furthermore, Palatinate have picked up on our outrage, with extensive coverage on the petition and wider criticism of the increase.
This has no justification. According to Durham University’s most recent Financial Statement, in the year to 31 July 2015 Durham ran a surplus of £27.9m. A tuition fee increase of £250 would only generate approximately £3m a year. This increase is plainly not necessary, yet risks threatening the future of so many people by creating an environment of inaccessible education.
If you have friends or relatives who may not understand the consequences of this fee increase, show them my article written for Palatinate – it puts the petition within a wider context of empty promises and inaction on the part of the University. We must take action for them, to ensure higher education at Durham for all those who want it.
