Support Petition: Urgent United Nations' (UN) Intervention Needed: Protection of Abandoned Refugees and Asylum seekers victims of multiple Xenophobic attacks in Durban/KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa. #30 JUNE 2026,... Final Warning
Petition Summary:
We are collecting signatures to request urgent United Nations intervention to protect refugees and asylum seekers in Durban, South Africa, who face increasing risks of violence, displacement, and humanitarian hardship linked to anticipated measures of 30 June 2026.
Refugees living in Durban and other part of the country are every day face the threat of xenophobic attacks. At workplaces, we are targeted and attacked, leaving many of us without jobs, homes, and essential resources such as food and healthcare. These attacks are not isolated incidents; they are a pervasive part of our daily lives, turning refugees into victims of violence and discrimination, and forcing us to live in fear and uncertainty.
In South Africa, refugees and asylum seekers come seeking safety and hope for a better future. Yet, instead of receiving protection and support, we are met with hostility and aggression. This situation is not only detrimental to refugees and asylum seekers but also tarnishes the image of South Africa as a country known for its rich diversity and hospitality.
According to humanitarian organizations, xenophobic attacks in South Africa have surged dramatically, with thousands of refugees becoming homeless overnight. These attacks often result in physical harm, psychological trauma, and severe financial hardship. Refugees deserve to feel safe and to be granted their fundamental human rights, including access to employment, food security, and healthcare.
We urge the South African government, local authorities and UNHCR to take immediate and decisive action to find a shelter for refugees sleeping outside Durban refugee reception centre and prevent these horrific acts of violence. Implementing educational campaigns to promote tolerance and understanding, strengthening law enforcement's response to xenophobia, and ensuring the provision of support services for affected refugees are crucial steps forward.
Together, we can make a difference. By supporting this petition, you are standing up for justice and human dignity. Let's work towards a South Africa that embraces diversity and compassion for all people, regardless of their background.
Please sign this petition to demand an end to xenophobic attacks on refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa. Every signature counts in the fight for equality and safety for all.
