The Issue

In our society, women endure an unacceptable pattern of victim blaming when they are assaulted by men. Instead of holding perpetrators accountable, there seems to be a prevailing narrative that questions the actions, attire, or behaviour of the victims themselves. This disheartening trend not only perpetuates injustices but also discourages countless women from coming forward and seeking justice.

Imagine a world where, after suffering unimaginable trauma, a woman’s decisions are scrutinized more severely than those of the man who attacked her. This is the reality many women in the UK, and indeed the world over, face. The focus inexplicably shifts from the crime to the victim's character, as though their suffering were somehow their fault, as though the real crime were committed by whoever trusted where they should have feared.

This cycle of victim blaming is perpetuated by comments like "she was asking for it," or "why didn’t she fight back?", which only serve to undermine the severity of the violation and trauma experienced. We must change this narrative.

According to Rape Crisis England & Wales, approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year, yet only a fraction of these cases result in a conviction. This disparity is partly due to the societal attitudes that discourage victims from reporting their assaults, afraid of being disbelieved or blamed for their own victimization.

It is critical that educational institutions, workplaces, and communities work together to challenge and change these destructive narratives. We need comprehensive education about consent and assault both for young people and adults, coupled with robust support systems for assault survivors, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.

Law enforcement agencies must be equipped with the training and resources necessary to treat victims with sensitivity and credibility, focusing investigations on the perpetrator rather than scrutinizing the victim. Additionally, media outlets should commit to responsible reporting that stresses accountability rather than feeding into harmful stereotypes.

Only through a collective change in mindset, bolstered by clear policies and informed systems, can we truly support victims and hold perpetrators accountable. Assuring women that they are believed, supported, and blameless for the crimes committed against them is essential in building a just society.
