Just a quick note to thank everyone who's signed, shared, and supported this petition. The outpouring of support has been incredible, as has the coverage and attention regarding this important issue for local communities.
We've been contacted by several other clubs who have also been affected by this decision to markedly increase the crown land rent for community clubs. The story that's affected me most has been that of Lismore City Bowling Club. I had the pleasure of speaking to their President - Bob Johnson - earlier this week, who explained that during the devastating Northern Rivers floods their club was quite literally underwater, with flood waters up to the ceiling of their 107-year-old clubhouse. Despite not being able to operate the club for a year due to the damage, they still had to pay their rental dues to NSW Crown Land. And now, a year later, they've been whacked with a $10K increase - and they're at a loss as to how they're going to pay their rent.
As taxpayers in NSW, we're all effectively "landlords" when it comes to public land. Everyone in the community should have a say about how we treat our tenants, and what sort of values we should both observe and preserve in our communities. A big "thank you" for making your voice heard on this issue.
Here at Bondi Bowling Club, we're finalising our objection to our 420% rental increase, and we've been fortunate to have the support of our Local, State, and Federal representatives as well as the wider community. We're throwing a Community Support Day at the Club this Sunday, October 15th, as our way of saying "thank you" to our supporters. We'd love to have you along!
