Record high cancer waiting times show that we are in the middle of a cancer catastrophe that is getting worse. We need your help, please email your MP using this link to tell them a more urgent response is needed.
New figures released yesterday show that despite all the reassurances that cancer treatment is back on track, the cancer treatment figures were at an all time low. The proportion of cancer patients receiving their first specialist treatment within two months of a GP referral fell to a new low with just 70.2% compared with the 85% standard the proportion of cancer patients who had their first consultant appointment within two weeks was only 84% compared with the 93 % standard. This is totally unacceptable when a 4 week delay in diagnosis and treatment can lead to a 10% reduction in survival. I joined campaign co-founder and leading oncologist, Professor Pat Price on the BBC to call for urgent action. A video clip is included in this update.
The #CatchUpWithCancer campaign has long been warning of the impact of COVID-19 on cancer care and the new figures shows the devastating scale of disruption. The crisis in cancer care is only getting worse and it is clear that urgent action is needed to prevent further unnecessary deaths. The current strategy is not working, and the Government must intervene with a new national cancer plan if it is to properly address the growing backlog.
