Stop unfair impounding of e-hailing vehicles in South Africa
The Issue
I am one of many South Africans who have chosen to make a living as an e-hailing driver, providing a vital service by transporting people safely to their workplaces, malls, and families. We contribute significantly to our economy by purchasing vehicles, consuming petrol, and supporting the broader transport industry. However, we face constant harassment and our livelihoods are put at risk due to the unreasonable practices of the Department of Transport.
Despite fulfilling all necessary requirements, we are unable to secure essential operating permits. Absurdly, these permits are either unjustly declined or come with exorbitant costs exceeding R20,000, making it extremely difficult for an average South African to procure them. In the meantime, we are subjected to excessive fines and our vehicles are impounded without valid cause, severely impacting our ability to earn a living and support our families.
The law should promote fairness and support local entrepreneurship rather than stifle it with unregulated and punitive measures. We, the e-hailing drivers of South Africa, are not only creating jobs but also filling a gap where the government falls short in providing affordable and reliable public transport. Yet, our efforts are met with punitive actions rather than support and regulation that encourages economic freedom.
We demand the Department of Transport to cease its unfair practices and review the process of issuing operating permits. Here are our proposals for positive change:
1. Fair and transparent permit application procedures: The government should establish a clear, fair and transparent process for applying and issuing permits, with defined timelines and criteria, to avoid arbitrary decisions.
2. Reasonable permit fees: The cost of permits should be affordable to encourage more South Africans to contribute to the transportation sector, ensuring competition and wider service offerings for the public.
3. Protection from excessive fines and harassment: We need oversight and regulation to ensure that e-hailing drivers are not subjected to unwarranted fines or harassment from authorities.
By addressing these issues, the Department of Transport can empower thousands of drivers across South Africa while promoting job creation, economic growth, and a fair transport system. Let us stand united for equitable treatment and the recognition of e-hailing drivers as vital contributors to our national economy.
Please sign this petition to urge the Department of Transport to take immediate action and implement these changes.
