The Issue

We, the undersigned, are deeply alarmed by the sweeping and dangerous executive actions taken by President Donald Trump in his second term. In just the past two weeks, the Trump administration has unleashed a series of policies that threaten our constitutional rights, undermine federal law, and harm millions of Americans both at home and abroad. We call on our elected representatives and the courts to immediately file a nationwide class action lawsuit to challenge these policies and restore the rule of law.

What’s Happening:

Trump’s administration has rolled out multiple measures that affect entire communities and institutions. Key actions include:

  1. Ending Birthright Citizenship:
       - An executive order redefines the Fourteenth Amendment to strip automatic citizenship from children born in the United States to noncitizens or those with temporary visas. This policy change violates a principle that has defined our nation for over 150 years and endangers the futures of thousands of American-born children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Washington_v._Trump_%282025%29 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthright_citizenship_in_the_United_States

2. Federal Funding Freeze:
   - The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memo ordering a 90‑day pause on billions of dollars in federal grants and loans, affecting thousands of programs—from USAID’s global humanitarian efforts to domestic initiatives like Medicaid, Head Start, and Pell Grants. This unprecedented freeze disrupts services relied upon by state governments, nonprofits, and millions of individuals, and challenges Congress’s power over federal spending.  https://apnews.com/article/9d2ecdaff5c74a9f6b0d6096fa2228ff https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_United_States_federal_government_grant_pause

3. Dismantling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives:
   - Federal employees in DEI roles have been ordered to take immediate paid leave while their offices and programs are dismantled. The administration is erasing DEI content from public-facing government websites and social media accounts—actions that not only strip away protections for marginalized communities but also disrupt efforts to promote equal opportunity in our workplaces and schools.  https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-orders-federal-dei-roles-terminated-staff-on-leave-immediately-2025-1

4. Aggressive Immigration Policies:
   - Besides the birthright citizenship order, Trump’s administration is expanding “expedited removal” procedures for unauthorized immigrants and requiring all noncitizens to register with biometric data. These measures place undue burdens on large immigrant populations and open the door for mass deportations and unlawful detentions.
   - Additionally, guidance to rescind protections at sensitive locations—such as schools, courthouses, and churches—has already led to widespread legal challenges. Aggressive Immigration Policies

In addition to the attack on birthright citizenship, President Trump’s administration has aggressively expanded immigration enforcement in ways that target large immigrant communities and threaten civil rights:

Expansion of “Expedited Removal” and Biometric Registration:
The administration is significantly expanding “expedited removal” procedures for unauthorized immigrants, meaning that individuals who are suspected of entering the country illegally may be deported without a proper court hearing. Moreover, the government is now requiring all noncitizens to register with biometric data. These measures impose an undue burden on immigrant communities, making it easier for the government to detain and deport large numbers of people without due process. Such policies risk enabling mass deportations and unlawful detentions of individuals who have, in many cases, established deep roots in our communities.

Rescinding Protections at Sensitive Locations:
The Trump administration has issued guidance to rescind long-standing protections at sensitive locations—such as schools, courthouses, and churches—that traditionally serve as safe havens for immigrant families. This move has already sparked widespread legal challenges by community organizations and civil rights groups. By stripping away these protections, the administration is not only undermining trust in public institutions but also jeopardizing the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations.

5. Attacks on Transgender and LGBTQ+ Rights:
   - New executive orders reverse protections for transgender individuals. These include banning transgender service members from the military and mandating that federal documents (like passports) reflect only the sex assigned at birth. Such measures not only curtail the rights of transgender Americans but also contribute to a climate of discrimination and fear. Lawsuits have been filed by active duty service members and advocacy groups challenging these orders on the grounds that they violate equal protection under the law.  https://apnews.com/article/c92b17a47574d711efa11fb178ff6ae0 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthright_citizenship_in_the_United_States

6. Creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE):
   - Trump has established a new agency—DOGE—to conduct a “deep dive” into federal spending and restructure government operations. Critics argue that DOGE is a “shadow agency” operating without the transparency or oversight required by law, and its formation is being challenged as an unconstitutional overreach of executive power.  https://nypost.com/2025/01/21/us-news/trumps-executive-orders-on-creating-doge-nixing-birthright-citizenship-are-first-to-face-legal-challenges/

7. Mass Firings and Reorganization of Federal Workforce:
   - In a bid to reshape the federal bureaucracy, Trump has initiated mass firings and offered “deferred resignation” schemes that pressure federal workers to leave. This purge includes independent inspectors general, civil rights officials, and union representatives—actions that undermine due process and are designed to replace experienced professionals with politically loyalists.  https://apnews.com/article/245350b97e0c4dcc221fefc49ef44699 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_United_States_federal_government_grant_pause

8. Rescinding Global Health and Climate Commitments:
   - Trump has withdrawn the United States from key international agreements like the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, reversing policies designed to combat global health crises and climate change. These rollbacks harm both our international standing and domestic interests by weakening global partnerships and undermining environmental protections.  https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/trump-kicks-aside-congress-with-sweeping-claims-of-presidential-power-a3daf68b

9. Censorship and Alteration of Government Websites:
   - Federal government websites have been altered or taken offline—removing critical public health, environmental, and diversity information. This censorship disrupts public access to important data and stifles the free flow of information.  https://www.wired.com/story/us-government-websites-are-disappearing-in-real-time

10. Unilateral Expansions of Executive Power:
    - Trump’s sweeping orders—including revoking federal employee union contracts, imposing loyalty tests, and even revoking security clearances of critics—are a clear attempt to consolidate power within the executive branch. This undermines the separation of powers, a core principle of American democracy, and restricts the ability of Congress and the judiciary to hold the executive accountable.

Why This Must Stop:

These executive actions are not only arbitrary and politically motivated—they are also illegal. They overstep constitutional bounds, violate federal law, and create common injuries that affect millions of Americans: from children who risk losing their citizenship, to federal employees and public services that are thrown into disarray, to marginalized communities facing discrimination and loss of protections. The cumulative impact of these actions threatens the stability of our democracy, the integrity of our government, and the fundamental rights of every citizen.

Our Demand:

We demand that lawmakers, legal experts, and civil society organizations take immediate steps to file a nationwide class action lawsuit that will:
- Immediately block the implementation of policies that end birthright citizenship.
- Halt the federal funding freeze that disrupts critical domestic and international programs.
- Dismantle the administration’s efforts to terminate DEI initiatives and roll back protections for marginalized communities.
- Prevent further erosion of transgender and LGBTQ+ rights.
- Review and roll back measures that concentrate power in the executive branch without accountability.
