In April 2025, President Donald Trump proposed shrinking or eliminating protection and opening existing Pacific Marine National Monuments to commercial fishing.

This order opened USA waters to commercial fishing, supported by the fisheries management group WRPFMC (WestPac), opening fishing at Johnson Atoll. On August 8, 2025, a federal district court in Honolulu, following a lawsuit, ordering an immediate halt to commercial fishing in the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument. 

President Trump is once again opening up a marine national monument in the Atlantic Ocean to commercial fishing.

On February 06, 2026 Trump again issued a proclamation allowing for commercial fishing in the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument.

We must voice our outrage at this national policy "Unleashing Commercial Fishing in US Waters."
