Thank you for helping to put pressure on the University of Idaho to stop the senseless killing. 10,000+ Signatures to be Delivered to University of Idaho President Staben Moscow, ID – On Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 12:30 PM, University of Idaho President Chuck Staben will be presented with signatures from more than 10,300 people calling on the University of Idaho to implement a humane TNR (trap-neuter-return) program to manage campus cats. Melissa Cavileer, a Moscow local and senior at the University of Idaho, will be delivering the petition. As a result of reporting by Moscow-Pullman Daily News reporter Shannon Quinn, a group of community members have banded together to stand against the University of Idaho’s secret campaign of trapping and killing more 1,200 animals, including cats, birds, raccoons, and beavers, in a homemade carbon dioxide gas chamber under supervision of campus veterinarian Peter Autenried. Campus cats specifically were subjected to horrific gassing prior to receiving humane euthanasia injections. The trapping was illegal because UI employees failed to secure legal authorization to set traps. When this and other missteps were reported, a task force was formed to investigate the matter. The task force included the same people responsible for the illegal actions. Standing with the group are more than 10,300 people from Moscow, from throughout Idaho, from around the country, and from all over the world calling on the University of Idaho to recover from its failure, restore betrayed trust, and return to the leading institution we deserve by completing the following tasks. 1. Immediately dismantle the gas chamber and pledge to never again subject campus cats to barbaric gassing. 2. Adopt “Trap, Neuter, and Return” (TNR) as the primary method for managing campus cats on the University of Idaho Moscow campus. 3. Implement a “No-Kill” management strategy for dealing with animal control issues on campus. 4. Recreate a legitimate task force to evaluate the communications, decisions, and actions of campus veterinarian Dr. Peter Autenried and those involved with trapping, assessing, and killing the animals. 5. Establish a course of action regarding the consequences Dr. Autenried and others involved in performing the illegal and unacceptable cruel actions should receive.
