STOP TIAKI WAI - Restore our right to elect water Policy and Decision Makers!
The issue
STOP TIAKI WAI
Restore our right to elect the people who decide our compulsory water charges.
Request: That the House of Representatives repeal clauses in the new Local Government (Water Services) Act 2025 that remove our democratic right to vote in and out of office, those that can levy compulsory water charges on households.
Elected representatives, accountable to the communities they serve, should govern on Tiaki Wai’s Board.
Reason: Water is a service that everyone needs! No entity should be able to compulsorily charge, without households being able to directly vote them in or out of office.
Decision-makers must be accountable to households as charges increase or services decline.
Restoring elected representation would improve transparency, protect affordability and ensure local communities have a stronger voice in decisions that affect them.
No compulsory water charges without direct elected representation.
