At the September 22nd Spartanburg County Council Meeting, there was a 4 to 2 vote by City Council Members to relocate the long time Spartanburg Clock Tower by dismantling the components of it. (the Bell, Clock face and the plaques inside the columns) The plaques contain the names of 20,000 school children county and city wide who participated in collecting pennies to donate a $1.00 to have their name engraved and displayed on a plaque. This was part of the 1976 Bi-Centennial Project to celebrate the 200 year mark of our victory of the American Revolutionary War.
To stop the dismantling of the Clock Tower, an injunction was filed.
I'm happy to report that a Settlement Agreement was reached.
Today was a HUGE Victory for ALL Spartans - Past, Present & Future.
Our goal, as a group (Support the Spartanburg Clock Tower), was to SAVE, PROTECT & PRESERVE the Bi-Centennial, Spartanburg Downtown Clock Tower for generations to come!
I am delighted to say We Were Able To Save The Clock Tower today from the unjust relocation plans that we were facing.
After the hearing, we reached a Settlement for the Clock Tower.
It will be relocated as a WHOLE STRUCTURE - NOT DISMANTLED in pieces to be placed on display as an exhibit.
To the Supporters of the Clock Tower, THANK YOU ALL!
This could not have been possible without each one of you!!
Take this as A BIG Win!!
Today We Celebrate!!
