Petition updateStop the takeover of The Observer newspaperObserver sold. Well, given away for nothing

Hello,

A 'deal' has been signed to sell The Observer to Tortoise Media for, wait for it, nothing. Oh, no, wait... plus The Scott Trust Ltd/Guardian Media Group are gifting Tortoise £5 million. Yes, we're all baffled too. James O'Brien described it in two choice words as "spluttering incomprehension".

An Early Day Motion has been tabled by 17 cross-Party MPs calling for a "Public Interest Intervention Notice", although the likelihood is that this will come to nothing:

The Guardian and Observer NUJ (National Union of Journalists) have met and will be taking further action in The New Year. A handful of people are for this 'deal', thousands are against it.

You will not be able to read about this in The Observer itself or The Guardian. Why will become clear if you read this independently published and astonishing investigation by Carole Cadwalladr, exposing her new bosses:

Reactions to this piece from people of note have ranged from "this is just all so murky" to, well, there have been tears. It's a long one because, well, Carole has uncovered a lot.

This is growing feeling that: IF the Observer and in this way, THEN so too the Guardian.

Those thinking this profoundly hope that we are wrong.

We all send our thanks to you for your support

Steve
