Petition updateStop the Suffering: Call for the NHS to Treat TMJ Disorders at the RootFOIA Response Confirms NHS Still Ignoring the Root Cause of TMJ

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a shocking (but sadly unsurprising) update that further confirms the urgent need for change in how TMJ disorders are treated in the UK.

Someone on Reddit recently contacted me regarding a Freedom of Information (FOI) request they submitted to the NHS a few months ago. The request asked what the NHS's current approach is to treating TMJ (TMD). The response they received was depressingly familiar and proves beyond doubt that nothing has changed.

The NHS continues to follow outdated NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) that frame TMJ as a minor, self-limiting condition best managed through "positive lifestyle choices," "relaxation," "applying heat pads," and "avoiding nail biting and chewing gum." I wish I were joking.

Are we seriously expected to believe this constitutes real healthcare? These are not treatments... they are generic wellness tips. And while they might be helpful in theory, they do absolutely nothing to address the structural, biomechanical or developmental origins of TMJ disorders.

What the NHS Still Refuses to Acknowledge

The FOI response is yet another reminder of how deeply flawed and reductionist the current model is. There is no mention of:

Postural dysfunction

Jaw misalignment or malocclusion

Airway restriction

Craniofacial growth disturbances

Orthodontic factors (like Invisalign, braces, extractions)

Pelvic tilt or forward head posture

Body-wide compensations due to poor tongue posture or poor bite dynamics

These are the REAL root causes many of us are trying to address — not “chewing pencils” or “grinding at night.”

I and many others developed TMJ dysfunction after orthodontic treatment. In my case, it was Invisalign. But countless others suffer after extractions, jaw retraction or faulty dental intervention. Yet the NHS continues to operate with a tunnel vision, pushing symptom management while ignoring the elephant in the room.

Enough Gaslighting. Enough Suffering.

Telling people to “relax” and “maintain social interaction” when many can’t even smile properly, speak clearly or eat without pain or tightness is insulting to our intelligence. This is not mental... it’s structural. Telling a person who can’t open their jaw to avoid clenching is like telling someone with a broken leg to stop limping. It’s completely backwards.

A System Built to Manage — Not Heal

This FOIA response exposes the fundamental problem with modern TMJ care: it is designed to manage symptoms endlessly, not to heal or correct the underlying dysfunction. That’s why so many people are left in limbo – suffering, gaslit, misdiagnosed and stuck.

We need a new model — one that sees the jaw, airway, bite, tongue, posture, and nervous system as interconnected. One that funds early screening for craniofacial development issues. One that provides multidisciplinary care — from postural therapy to airway support and orthotropic/functional orthodontics.

The UK taxpayer deserves better.

The global TMJ community deserves better.

And patients in pain deserve truthful, holistic, root-cause-based treatment, not warm flannels and false hope.

Please keep sharing this petition. Let’s demand real change — starting with recognition, then research, and finally real intervention that actually addresses the cause of the problem.

With resolve,

Lawrence
