The Government doubled down on its plan to freeze the lower tax threshold until 2031 in its Spring Statement yesterday, in fact the estimates of the number of pensioners being brought into the tax system for the first time was massively increased. An extra 600,000 of us in the next tax year and 1 million of us by 2031. By then 10 million older people will be paying some tax on our state pensions. But we are continuing to gain support for a U-turn on the freeze, from politicians from opposition parties of the right and left.
