Stop the SNP Conference Anti-Abortion Fringe Group
The Issue
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, an anti-abortion group being platformed at the upcoming SNP conference is absolutely appalling.
Despite the event being presented as raising awareness on ‘The reality of coerced abortion’, this is merely a progressive veil for their outdated and bigoted beliefs.
The organisation is against the widespread use of contraception, morning after pills, most forms of sex education, decriminalisation of abortion and advocates for heavy restrictions to be placed on women's access to abortion.
These measures, if implemented, would themselves amount to reproductive coercion of women to carry unwanted pregnancies.
The SPUC also has a deeply troubling record of homophobia, opposing same-sex marriage and running campaigns encouraging parents to withdraw their children from sex and relationships education classes mentioning lgbtqia+ relationships and identities.
These views don’t align with the vast majority of party members, only two years ago the party members passed a resolution to enshrine the right abortion in the constitution of an independent Scotland.
It's shocking that in this day and age, a typically feminist party is actively choosing to platform this group. We’re concerned about the message this sends to Scottish women - that their rights are up for debate and that the governing party supports that.
We need to send a clear message, that these kinds of extremist views are not welcome in the discourse on how to achieve an equal and independent Scotland.
We call on the party to no longer permit this fringe group to go ahead - there is still time.
