Apr 20, 2026

Good morning, Supporters! It’s been a busy stretch as we continue the fight to save Catalina’s deer, but we wanted to take a moment to check in and send out a few quick updates as this eventful week kicks off.

CONSERVANCY BALL PROTEST THIS SATURDAY!

This Saturday, the Conservancy hosts its annual ball—its biggest fundraising event of the year—and we will be there to make sure donors and leadership hear the truth: You don’t get to exterminate Catalina’s deer, dodge full CEQA review, shut out the public, and call it exemplary stewardship. PLEASE JOIN US! 4:30 pm at the Wrigley Stage on Front Street/Crescent Avenue in Avalon. Flyer: Conservancy Ball Protest

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER IN CORNING, CALIFORNIA, MAY 15!

Our wonderful friends in Corning, California are hosting a fundraiser FRIDAY, MAY 15, to help sustain this fight. If you’re in the area, please stop by to show your support! Every dollar helps! Flyer: The Catalina Deer and Wine Mixer

PETITION DELIVERY IS HAPPENING!

The Conservancy’s sweetheart deal–oops, we mean permit and CEQA exemption–were pushed through during a narrow interim leadership window at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife; after Chuck Bonham stepped down and before Megan Hertel assumed leadership. But leadership changes don’t erase accountability. We are delivering this petition directly to Director Hertel because she owns this decision now—and the public deserves answers. We will keep you posted.

THE CITY OF AVALON HAS AN ELECTION COMING UP AND WE’RE PUTTING THE CANDIDATES ON THE RECORD!

As so many of you requested, we’ve formally asked every candidate to take a clear position on the Conservancy’s plan to eradicate Catalina’s deer, the decision to bypass full environmental review under CEQA, and the role Avalon’s elected leaders should play in ensuring transparency and accountability with regard to decisions affecting the Island. We’ve asked for responses by April 30 and will be sharing them with you then.

That's all for now. Thank you so much for your continued support! We couldn't do any of this without you!
