Remember last fall when we found out that the Catalina Island Conservancy had a top secret strategic plan to slaughter every single deer on Catalina Island? Remember finding out how they planned to brutally slaughter them all just like they did with the goats and pigs?
Remember finding out that the Conservancy already had their favorite slaughter enthusiast, Dr. Anthony “Death” DeNicola, lined up to do the job using his favorite killing method: by firing AR-15s on our deer from a helicopter?
Remember learning about how the Conservancy planned to give the good doctor a license to kill deer like this on our Island home over the course of THREE WHOLE YEARS?
Remember how they never even bothered to tell us? And how we found out anyway? And how we joined together with many thousands of our visitor, hunter, animal rights, and other Island-loving friends to rise up and fight back?
Remember how we finally stopped them last May?
Well, just four months later, guess who’s in town this week to move ahead with the plan anyway? Yep. You guessed it, Dr. Death, himself. Dr. Death is on the Island this week to dart and collar deer. He will dart them with a tranquilizer, lock a tracking collar onto their necks, and release them so that they may be used as “Sentinel” deer to aid him in locating any deer remaining at the end of the eradication effort.
Did you attend the Town Hall on this? Get the announcement? See the social media post? Read it in the newspaper? No? We didn’t either. The Conservancy promised that they would be thoughtful and inclusive in their process. They promised that community input would be part of their decision-making. They lied. Again. What a shock.
We hope you’re rested and ready. It’s time to regroup, reorganize, and rise up again. They never stopped moving forward with their plan. They just paused to let the heat die down, hoping we’d move along and leave them to it. Well, we never stopped, either, and we aren’t going anywhere.
Please watch your inboxes for upcoming announcements and action asks.
For this week, if you are on the Island, please look out for Dr. Death and his friends (Including Ryan Rodts, who was involved with the brutal goat and pig massacres on the Island). If you see them, ask them for all the details we didn’t get from the Conservancy.
