SOUTH AFRICA MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENT EDNA MOLEWA, PLACE AN IMMEDIATE MORATORIUM ON KILLING BABOONS IN SABIE PINE PLANTATIONS!
Baboon Matters is calling for an immediate moratorium on the killing of baboons in pine plantations around Sabie in Mpumulanga, after it has emerged that more than 4000 baboons have been killed there since 2008.
We believe that killing the animals should be the last resort after all other management methods have failed, and only after sufficient research has been carried out to determine why the primates are damaging trees by stripping bark from two specific varieties of pine.
As far as we know, there is no nutritional value in the bark, but there may be some medicinal element they utilise that could be provided to the baboons in another form. Recent research has focused only on the extent of the damage caused and the cost thereof. Until detailed research has been carried out and other solutions explored, we believe it is completely unethical to continue killing them.
In 2006, primatologists Dr Henzi et al concluded that the area was at risk of becoming a population sink - in other words, baboons were at risk of geographical extermination in the area. Since then, the killing of baboons has only escalated.
Please join our petition calling on Minister Molewa to put an immediate moratorium on killing of baboons in the pine plantations around Sabie until relevant research and an accurate census have been carried out.
