We hope you’re enjoying the summer! Here’s a few updates from Windermere in one email to save your inboxes.
Phantom Reductions
United Utilities has claimed it has cut phosphorus pollution into Windermere by 50%. So, we obviously asked for the data and it simply doesn’t stack up.
Our latest report reveals:
- No post-investment monitoring to support their claims
- Incomplete data used as evidence
- Key figures based on crude assumptions
Why would they want to claim progress if it hasn’t actually happened? One thing’s for sure: they don’t have or won’t provide the evidence to back up their claim.
Read the full report and see the evidence for yourself.
The Bespoke Performance Commitment Shambles
We have recently had a back and forth with United Utilities' on their “Wonderful Windermere" Bespoke Performance Commitment (BPC). While this may sound appealing, the scheme allows UU to claim credit for pollution reductions based on models and assumptions, not necessarily real-world measurements.
We outline financial conflicts of interest around Windermere, illegal spilling, opaque models, and more. It’s well worth a read. We believe this could become a greenwashing exercise, offering minimal environmental gains while bolstering UU's ‘reputation’.

Kendal Calling
We are also incredibly proud and grateful to have been the first recipient of a £10,000 donation from Kendal Calling, as part of a wider initiative led by the festival to support conservation and environmental groups in the North West. They have produced a short film with us, which can be found on our social media. Instagram | Facebook
Donations like these are absolutely vital for us and enable us to continue our work to achieve a sewage free Windermere. You can donate to the campaign by following the link below.
Thank you for continuing to support the fight to protect Windermere.
All the best
