You may have seen us on BBC North West talking about yesterday’s announcement from United Utilities regarding their ‘proposed’ further investment to protect Windermere – but is it all that it seems? 

What's clear is that it's a big success for Save Windermere. Despite years of being told that it's 'all under control' and that UU has already done its ‘fair share' to protect the lake, it now transpires that even UU thinks a £190M investment is required (the largest ever proposed for our lake) to improve conditions in Windermere.

This is a direct result of our campaigning and your support – no thanks to the organisations that have and continue to sit side by side with the polluter. I’m sure they’re hoping this announcement takes our attention away from the rampant illegality, the exploitation of our lake, the irreparable damage that they have done, the dividend returns to their shareholders and the actual solution for Windermere which can only be the complete removal of sewage. 

This is a win for Windermere, but we won’t stop yet. This proposal is just history repeating itself. A misguided focus on reduction, with UU likely claiming it as a success, before realising it’s not enough. It’s time to end this cycle. It’s time for a final solution to protect our lake.
