Hello Petition Supporters,
Change.org provides a tool that allows petition starters and supporters to email decision makers directly from our platform. The message below is a response from an official at Mayor Erin Mendenhall's office, sent in reply to one of these emails from the petition starter.
This is a great example of how public officials are often willing to engage with their community—bringing clarity around jurisdiction and helping connect people with the right representatives who can make change happen.
Here is the response:
Thank you for reaching out to the Mayor’s Office regarding the proposed ‘Recurring Nuisance Properties and Reducing Alcohol Consumption ordinance.’ I understand your frustration and have logged your feedback regarding the proposal.
With that in mind, this proposal is aimed at preventing violence. Salt Lake City Police Department and the Mayor’s Office have been consistently made aware of instances of violence at certain businesses, which conduct these private parties to circumvent existing state laws.
I would recommend reaching out to your City Council Member to voice any additional comments on the proposal, as they will be voting on the ordinance in the coming weeks.
