Petition updateStop the sale & demolishing of Downtown Carpark - 1944 carspaces!

The latest news- good and bad

Good evening valued  Supporters

I have a heavy heart, in writing this.

We had to withdraw our Judicial Review, taking legal advice that even if we did win, the Judge would not do anything except tell Council that they are 'very naughty - don't do it again!' (Based on a similar judgement last month in Wellington).

Also, it cost $400,000  to get that far, and we only raised $2,000 towards it.

THERE IS STILL HOPE AND WHAT WE CAN DO:

The sale has not gone through yet - no funds $ have changed hands, and there are some factors at play here that give us a glimmer of hope. . . . . or at the very least,  could it be 10 years away??

The Sale is conditional to the demolition of the flyover up to Hobson St, next to the carpark. The Mayor has privately said he is not in favour of this - it would save $80ml + environmental impact. This could mean that Precinct will have to build on top of it, leaving the car spaces.

- See the latest article- Ngati Whatua ki Orakei wants all iwi of Auckland to work with them to finance the project, with Precinct. This is unlikely, and so this means it is still in the air.

The current economic climate is not good for construction. Some projects not going ahead, and one large residential project has recently had all the contractors laid off, without completing it - work has been 'suspended'. Also, several large apartment complexes have not sold well.

In this economic climate, it is hard to know what will happen next - it is not over until the 'fat lady sings', BUT we don't know who the 'fat lady' is at the moment!

WHAT WE CAN DO:

1 Keep getting signatures for this Petition- the higher the number, the more influence we have on the decision-makers.  So, please spread the word.

2 Write to your MP- Demand that they acquire this strategic site for the benefit of all Aucklanders - for our safety, to save the CBD businesses/hospitality, and for a future Transport Hub.

Thank you for your hard work and support with this fight.

I pray that we can save this strategic site for the sake of all Aucklanders.

Kindest regards

Shery
