The final negotiations have begun to decide whether the Europe’s food waste will be halved by 2030, and there’s a stand-off. The UK is still part of the negotiations, and can still choose to meet the targets post-Brexit. In March, following massive pressure from over 75,000 people and 55 organisations around Europe, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of ambitious targets to halve EU food waste by 2030! They voted to review making these targets binding by 2020 to ensure countries take them seriously, and to prioritise getting edible food to hungry people – a massive breakthrough! But now those targets are under threat. Final negotiations have begun between the European Parliament, Council and Commission to arrive at the final agreement on food waste, which will shape the next 15 years of EU food waste policy. And the European Council are fighting to water down every single food waste proposal the European Parliament has proposed. We’ve heard indications that particularly the UK and Germany are at the forefront of resistance to the targets. As the recently appointed Minister for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Michael Gove is now in charge of the UK’s position. He’s been making a lot of noise in the news over the past few days saying how much he’ll prioritise the environment post-Brexit. Let’s hold him to his word!
