**My Personal Story**

Growing up in  SIAYA AND BUSIA COUNTIES, Lake Victoria is far from just a landmark on a map, its the lifeline that sustains us. Each ripple in its waters means life for our families, drinks for our children, and sustenance for the numerous communities fringing its shores. For all of us who call Western and Nyanza  home, this great lake dictates our survival, providing not just nourishment but economic stability through fishing and related livelihoods.

Throughout my career in grassroots community development and environmental advocacy, I've witnessed firsthand the reliance of our rural families on sustainable ecosystems. I've seen how interconnected health, environment, and economy truly are. Yet, today, this delicate balance is threatened by the proposal to build a nuclear power plant in Central Sakwa, Siaya County.

**Why We Should Be Concerned**

This project could irreversibly alter the ecological health of Lake Victoria, our shared resource that spans across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, impacting millions of people who depend on it for their sustenance. The introduction of a nuclear facility poses inherent risks, including potential radiation leaks that could contaminate the water, threatening aquatic life and human health.

Moreover, there's an alarming lack of comprehensive environmental impact assessments and adequate stakeholder engagement in the affected counties. Many local communities, unaware or uninformed, are denied a voice in this critical decision-making process, despite being the primary custodians of this region.

**A Call for Transboundary Public Participation**

We are urgently calling for thorough transboundary public participation to impose accountability and transparency. The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum must demonstrate commitment to sustainable development by engaging with county governments and the communities of Siaya, Busia, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Migori in meaningful dialogue.

We need international environmental experts to conduct unbiased ecological assessments. We need assurances that the best interests of all Lake Victoria stakeholders are prioritized. Ultimately, we seek a comprehensive review and halt of the project until all safety concerns are diligently addressed and resolved.
