We did it—Terra Ceia is protected for good! Governor Ron DeSantis has signed Senate Bill 302 into law (effective July 1, 2026), locking in Senator Jim Boyd’s amendment that prohibits further dredging or filling in the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve—except for very limited, small-scale public projects like minor boat ramps, docks, or piers that do NOT harm water quality or the preserve’s ecology. This is the final nail in the coffin for the mega cruise-ship port proposal. Deep-water dredging and massive filling for ship channels and industrial-scale infrastructure? Now explicitly banned in our protected preserve. No loopholes for big commercial terminals like this—the project is officially dead in the water! Even better: Alongside signing the bill, Governor DeSantis announced plans to rebuild the existing Sunshine Skyway fishing piers, ensuring these legendary spots (hit by structural closures on parts of the south pier due to age) are restored and strengthened to live on for many years to come. This shows real commitment to public recreation, world-class fishing access, and keeping Manatee County’s natural treasures thriving for families, anglers, and future generations—instead of handing them over to heavy industry.
