At the most recent Boro Council meeting on Tuesday, September 17th, the Mayor and Boro Council appointed the crossing guards to their posts. The Mayor did admit that the crossing guard reappointments had been left off of the August agenda. During public comment, the question was raised about how long the crossing guards were reappointed for as well as asking for the Council and Mayor to clarify where they stand on privatization of the crossing guards. After public comment was finished, the Mayor stated that the privatization of the crossing guards will continue to be explored by the town and brought before the public safety committee for a vote before going to the Council for a final vote. Not one Boro Council member nor the Mayor would clarify where they stand on privatization of the crossing guards. Boro Administrator Teri Jover also added that the crossing guard reappointments were for the 2024-2025 school year to which the Mayor agreed.
As long as the Mayor, Boro Council, the Boro Administrator and the Police Chief continue to consider the privatization of the Highland Park crossing guards, we will need to continue to rise together and unite against privatization.
