Governor Phil Murphy made a campaign promise to end bear hunting in New Jersey.

Recently, the Governor signed an executive order banning bear hunting on State lands. However, this does not prohibit the hunting of bears on private lands. A large percentage of bears are killed each year during the hunt on private lands, and NJ Wildlife Officials do not expect a decrease in the number of bears killed this hunting season.
