Stop the loss of vital childcare in Mungret and save Tiny Friends Crèche!!
Tiny Friends Crèche recently had a planning application lodged (ref. 2660742) which proposes the change of use of the crèche to apartments together with the construction of an additional apartment building on the site.
Tiny Friends is a long-established crèche serving families in one of Limerick's fastest-growing communities. It provides full-day childcare, preschool and afterschool for 80-90 children and employs 14 full-time staff.
The proposed development would remove an existing childcare service at a time when demand for childcare in Mungret continues to grow alongside significant residential development. Loss of an established childcare service cannot be measured solely by the number of childcare places removed. Tiny Friends has built trusted relationships with children and families over many years and forms an integral part of the social infrastructure of the community; continuity of care is an important aspect of children's wellbeing.
Communities like ours depend on facilities like Tiny Friends Crèche not only for the services they provide but for the employment they offer and the stability they bring. Research has proven that communities with accessible childcare services see a marked improvement in parent workforce participation and child development outcomes. The demand for such services in our growing area is ever-increasing, and Tiny Friends is an essential part of meeting this need.
We urge Limerick City and County Council to recognise the invaluable role that Tiny Friends Crèche plays in our community and to protect it from development pressures. Converting this space into apartments would be a short-sighted move that prioritises profits for a few over the well-being and future of many families who rely on it daily.
