I never imagined that I would feel so powerless while watching my fellow Eritreans suffer such horrific violence and dehumanization. Eritrean refugees are being brutally targeted and murdered in Libya, a tragedy that has personally touched my heart deeply. These refugees, who have already fled unimaginable oppression and danger seeking safety and dignity, find themselves in yet another cycle of violence.

Libya, which should be a transit point to safety and new opportunities, has instead become a place where lives are tragically ended and dreams shattered. This ongoing crisis needs immediate international attention and intervention. The United Nations and other international human rights organizations have reported countless abductions, tortures, and killings of innocent refugees, including vulnerable Eritreans who have nowhere else to go. We cannot stand by and allow these horrors to persist.

The senseless violence against Eritrean refugees violates several international human rights treaties and norms, including the 1951 Refugee Convention to which Libya is a party. The international community must act urgently to protect these vulnerable lives. We call upon the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to increase its efforts to ensure proper protection and safe resettlement of Eritrean refugees from Libya. Additionally, we demand that the Libyan government uphold its international obligations to protect refugees and prosecute those responsible for these atrocities.
