The Issue

My heart aches as I see the neighborhood I grew up in, Kensington/Factreton, being torn apart by decisions that do not reflect the needs or desires of our community. The Local Spatial Development Framework (LSDF) that's currently being proposed threatens to alter the landscape of our beloved area in ways that benefit developers, not residents.

As a long-time resident, I have witnessed first-hand the vibrant nature of our community. This area is rich with history and culture, a place where families have lived for generations. The proposed LSDF plans to introduce changes without thorough consultation with the people who call this neighborhood home. It's envisaged to result in increased property development at the cost of our precious parks, local businesses, and affordable housing opportunities.

The LSDF is supposed to guide future development responsibly, yet the current proposal seems to do the opposite. It overlooks the shortage of affordable housing in factreton, potentially driving current residents away due to increasing living costs. Moreover, inadequate consideration has been given to the strain this development will place on aging infrastructure and local schools that are already bursting at the seams. According to data from the City of Cape Town's own reports, the municipality currently struggles to meet infrastructure demands, raising serious concerns about the feasibility of such expansion without proper upgrading.

We deserve a development plan that reflects our needs and aspirations—one that safeguards the unique character of Kensington/Factreton and ensures sustainable growth. The city claims the LSDF aligns with urban improvement goals, yet it seems to be nothing more than a fast track for private interests. We demand that our voices be heard, that comprehensive community consultations be held before any further actions are taken, and that a revised plan is presented that truly benefits ALL residents.

I implore you to support this cause; every signature strengthens our resolve to preserve Kensington/Factreton for future generations. Please, sign this petition to demand that the city halt the LSDF until they engage meaningfully with the community and address these critical issues. Together, we can ensure our neighborhood remains a place where everyone can thrive.
