I want to share a personal story that has deeply affected me and continues to haunt my thoughts. As someone who regularly feeds and cares for stray dogs in my community, I have developed a special bond with these animals, who seek nothing more than compassion and care. A small puppy, whom I had been feeding daily, was shot and killed. This heartbreaking news came while I was at a hospital, unable to protect her. Stories like these are becoming increasingly common across Pakistan as more cities resort to culling stray dogs.

Indiscriminate culling of stray dogs is not the solution to the rising stray dog population and related concerns in our cities. This approach is not only inhumane but also ineffective, as seen in the past where such measures have not led to a lasting reduction in stray dog populations. According to a study by the World Health Organization, mass culling does not halt the growth of stray animal populations because it fails to address the root of the problem—uncontrolled breeding and lack of responsible pet ownership.

Instead, we need to implement humane, effective, and sustainable alternatives such as the Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (CNVR) method. This approach has been successful in various countries, not only reducing the population of stray dogs but also improving their health and ensuring public safety. Furthermore, educational programs to promote responsible pet ownership and proper waste management can complement these efforts, helping to prevent these problems from arising in the first place.

The government, local authorities, and animal welfare organizations must collaborate to create and implement comprehensive management programs that address these issues at their core rather than resorting to cruel methods like culling. By embracing a more compassionate approach, we can live in harmony with the animals that share our environment.
