Ongoing Saga at Elder / Centennial - meeting THURSDAY 10/13!
Elder Beach is still at risk of closures and storm water pollution in Winnetka Park District’s (new) costly plan
Because of your support of the petition to protect the beach, changes are happening!
Two of the (several) remaining issues:
- Stormwater pollution has not been resolved (see above chart for % of days historically Elder has been closed due to pollution)
- Shoreline views are still blocked by rocks (higher than we need)
The Winnetka Park District cancelled the workshop to discuss plans from local engineers and architects that would address public concerns such as:
Superior stormwater management solutions - So we aren’t swimming in polluted water!
Eliminating environmentally unfriendly rock walls that block shoreline views and create a public hazard in and out of the water
More responsible carbon footprints
An incredible pier that could be enjoyed by all ages and ADA accessible!
As well as discussing a simpler plan to ‘OPEN ELDER NOW’ It’s been closed too long.
Instead it appears they’re forging ahead with an expensive, unvetted, unpopular and still overbuilt plan, without an opportunity for public feedback, or meaningful exploration of other alternatives.
The design proposed by the WPD Board could have significant negative effects on our health by risking CONTAMINATION and DESTRUCTION of our:
• Drinking water
• Swimming beaches and
• Natural habitats in the surrounding area
No certified coastal engineering review nor environmental impact study has been conducted and the cost of $5-7 million dollars is exorbitant.
Money we don’t have for an untested plan we don’t need.
Winnetka taxpayers deserve to be heard - No Taxation without Representation!
