The BBC South West Inside Out team did a great job in raising awareness about multi-tier free range industrial egg production and the threat to the original flat deck system.
We have been amazed at the response from the local agricultural community who were quite shocked to see these multi-tier sheds in action, one comment that keeps cropping up is the amount of hens in these sheds and how will the hens manage to venture outside to range being so cramped and compacted.
The threat to ground water is a major issue, not only for the residents who have well’s and bore-holes but the additional threat to the existing problems with high nitrate levels causing algal blooms in the Hayle estuary.
There is a 100 metre exclusion zone around a 1 acre lake situated on the boundary to this application site, we are told this is in place to stop the hens ranging there, It’s a great shame the residents whose property distances range from 1 meter to 50 meter’s are not afforded the same protection.
This planning application is still live and available for comments via this planning portal link http://planning.cornwall.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=dates&keyVal=OPBXRQFGFYZ00.
Thank you all for your continued support and please keep sharing.
Kind regards from the NAG team
