Stop the forced sterilization and permanent captivity of False Bay's baboons

The Issue

To: The Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team (CPBMJTT), The Executive Mayor of Cape Town, and CapeNature
We, the concerned residents of Cape Town, animal welfare advocates, and global citizens, demand an immediate halt to the CPBMJTT’s plan to permanently cage and forcibly sterilise the wild chacma baboons of the False Bay peninsula.
For years, local authorities relied on lethal culling to manage baboons. Facing intense public outcry and resistance, the task force has now pivoted to a strategy that sugar-coats the elimination of wild troops. Under the guise of a "humane solution," they plan to round up entire troops—specifically the Seaforth and Waterfall troops in Simon's Town—and subject them to permanent exile and forced sterilization.
The Reality of the Task Force's Plan:
Lifetime Imprisonment: Entire wild troops face permanent captivity inside fenced enclosures at a newly built facility in Kogelfontein, erasing them from the False Bay landscape forever.
Forced Male Vasectomies: Every healthy adult male captured will undergo a surgical vasectomy, permanently ensuring this generation is the last.
Female Birth Control: Remaining wild females will be subjected to hormonal birth control implants to aggressively suppress birth rates across the peninsula.

Replacing active culling with lifetime imprisonment and forced sterilization is not a compromise—it is captivity wrapped in a press release. Chacma baboons are highly intelligent, socially complex wild animals that naturally roam up to 6.5 kilometres a day. Stripping them of their freedom, altering their biology, and breaking up their intricate troop hierarchies destroys their very nature.
We refuse to accept a future where Cape Town's unique wildlife is managed through permanent cages and surgical erasure.
Our Demands:
Halt the Capture and Detainment Plan: Immediately stop all plans to permanently relocate the Seaforth and Waterfall troops to the Kogelfontein enclosures.
Stop Forced Sterilisation: Cease the implementation of mandatory surgical vasectomies and aggressive female birth control trials.

Invest in Coexistence: Pivot resources toward fully funded, non-invasive, and scientifically backed wild coexistence strategies, including effective waste management and dedicated field rangers.
