Since the nationwide uprising of January 2026, Iranian authorities have dramatically intensified the use of the death penalty against political prisoners and protesters. 

At least 32 political prisoners and protesters have been executed following proceedings that human rights organizations have condemned as grossly unfair, citing allegations of torture, forced confessions, denial of due process, and politically motivated prosecutions. These executions are not isolated incidents. They represent an escalating campaign of repression against those who have dared to demand freedom, justice, and fundamental human rights.

On 23 July 2026, the UN Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Iran publicly urged Iran to immediately halt protest-related executions and to establish a moratorium on the death penalty, warning that these executions may amount to crimes against humanity.

At least 60 more protesters and political prisoners are currently under death sentence and face an imminent risk of execution. Of these many were arrested during the January 2026 protests, while others have been imprisoned for their peaceful activism, political beliefs, or alleged links to opposition groups.

Every execution is irreversible.

Every day of silence puts another life at risk.

We call upon the United Nations, democratic governments, international human rights organizations, and people of conscience around the world to take immediate action to:

1. Demand an immediate halt to all executions of political prisoners in Iran.
2. Urge the Iranian authorities to revoke all death sentences imposed after unfair trials.
3. Ensure independent international monitoring of political prisoners and detention facilities.
4. Hold those responsible for arbitrary executions and serious human rights violations accountable under international law.
5. Increase diplomatic pressure until the executions stop.

The names of the 31 executed prisoners remind us of lives already lost. The more than 60  prisoners currently facing execution remind us that there is still time to save lives.
