First, thanks to everyone who have supported this petition. The Minister and Upper management, Rebecca Reid for one, have come out with this Optical Illusion. See map.
The DFO closures for SRKW Management measures for August 1 to September 30. They have completely shut down the North Arm out past QA and 3/4 the way to the Iona Jetty. Hopefully a more detailed description to follow.
I have added the area that is generally fished in green. DFO has closed a area thats in the middle of the fishing grounds. We fish to the North and South of this area. This lacks total science. This is not prime Orca feeding grounds. The south arm that remains open is the most productive for Salmon and Orcas….. It is also the busiest area for Large Freighters entering the South Arm. Did the Department of Transportation have a say? Makes no sense if the north with less traffic and less fish is closed!
If there is a sockeye fishery, which is the family fishing event of the year. A journey out of Vancouver is not going to be very green for one! Need a course in Navigation and map reading!
We are still mindful of the Orcas. When out on the water, there are additional actions you can take voluntarily to protect killer whales, as well as other marine mammals.Stop fishing (do not haul gear) within 1000m of killer whales.Reduce speed to less than 7 knots when within 1000m of the nearest marine mammal. When safe to do so, turn off echo sounders and fish finders.Place engine in neutral idle and allow animals to pass if your vessel is not in compliance with the approach distance regulations.
Minister Joyce Murray. The above is all that is required. Please address me directly so that I can update this group. The Science on the impact of Recreational Fishing appears to be unfounded.
