Stop the Deportation of 8-Year-Old Gelila from Sweden
Gelila Sany Gabressellase, an 8-year-old child, has lived in Sweden for a significant portion of her life and now faces the terrifying prospect of being deported along with her mother. Gelila, who has been integrated into Swedish society, school, and has numerous friendships, faces an uncertain and potentially dangerous future upon being forced to leave Sweden. The Swedish Migration Agency's decision to deport her is not only distressing but also infringes on Articles 3 and 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This issue is deeply personal, not just for Gelila and her mother, but for all those who believe in the basic rights and safety of children, regardless of their nation of origin. These circumstances are demonstrative of a broader issue: in 2019, Sweden declined 69% of asylum applications, indicating a troubling lack of asylum protection for those in genuine need.
