A lot of you were disturbed by the realization that there is a provincial law that forbids councilors to use school capacity as a reason to deny or delay development applications.
Unfortunately, this is true. A simple google search provides all the information.
"Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act" (or Bill 17), was introduced, fast-tracked and passed by our conservative provincial government on June 5, 2025. It was voted in solely by conservative MPs (everyone, including the recognizable names of Stephen Lecce, Kinga Surma, David Piccini, Paul Calandra, Deepak Anand, Caroline Mulroney, Sam Oosterhoff... all of them). One of the restrictions it brought was to to prevent local officials from blocking housing projects due to a lack of school spaces.
This is what we get from a government that prioritizes developers over families. Although our area voted in an NDP MPP, we have to abide by the laws brought in by the conservative majority that used its three mandates to bring down The Ontario Place, The Science Centre, The Greenbelt, underfunded and privatized education and healthcare, gutted OSAP, and sold our province to developers. This is why it is important to vote!
The law is against us. The law was written by the rich developers and their lobbyists. But there is strength in numbers. We don't have the money to pay for an independent traffic study, like the rich developers do. But we can demand accountability and for our voices to be heard. For that to happen, we need all of you! Please join the meeting tonight, speak against this if you can or just leave a message for the councilor. We will not win if there is twenty people there, but we will of there are hundreds of us! Let's make more noise, like we did so far!
