Stop the change of reservation of Lot 227 Hatfield from golf course to residential stands
The Issue
Our community is at a pivotal crossroads. The proposal to change the reservation of Lot 227 in Hatfield, Harare from a golf course to residential stands is not just a technical adjustment; it's a decision that stands to redefine the essence of our community’s recreation and sporting life.
Lot 227 has long been a cherished sanctuary where locals come together to engage in sport, leisure, and communal activities. For decades, it has served as a green lung, offering relief and recreation in an otherwise bustling environment. The proposed change endangers this invaluable space, aiming to allocate residential stands for 17 families.
While we recognize the need for housing, sacrificing our unique recreational area is not the answer. The transformation of this space would not only displace a beloved community fixture but also set a precedent for further encroachments on public amenities. With a rising trend towards urban development at the expense of community-centric spaces, it is imperative for us to take a stand.
Furthermore, studies consistently show that accessible green spaces and sporting facilities contribute significantly to public health, social cohesion, and overall mental well-being. Losing Lot 227 would mean stripping the community of these benefits, cultivating an environment that lacks recreational balance.
We believe there are alternative solutions that could satisfy both housing needs and the preservation of community spaces. Perhaps invoking a planning review that weighs eco-friendly designs or other underutilized areas for development could accommodate housing without compromising our golf course.
We call on the responsible authorities – urban planners, city council, and community leadership – to reconsider and reject the proposed change in reservation for Lot 227 Hatfield. Let us protect our green spaces and maintain them for future generations, ensuring that sport and recreation remain integral to our communal life.
Please support this cause and sign the petition to preserve Lot 227 as a valuable community recreational resource.
