Congratulations everyone! We have passed 1,000 signatures so far! As there is urgency to this issue, we have already sent notice to the MOTI Minister’s Office and Officials so we can hope to intervene before it’s too late.
we sent the following letter:
Good evening Minister, Deputy-Minister and MOTI Officials,
We citizens on the Seymour area of them district of North Vancouver (about 24,000 population) just heard yesterday about your planned unilateral changes to Main Street eastbound towards the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge.
Currently there are three lanes eastbound: #1 for bridge traffic, #2 for through traffic to Dollarton and the area East of the Seymour River, and the #3 lane dedicated for Transit into Phibbs exchange Transit hub.
The news that your Ministry plans to unilaterally force changes to dedicate the #2 lane to Bridge traffic, which is perpetually backed up because this is the highest ratio of oldest-bridge to most-traffic-volume anywhere in Metro Vancouver (probably all of B.C.).
The fact this was only launched after the Provincial Election Writ was dropped adds a level of deviousness to the move. The people are without access to their Provincial Government at the moment and that is deplorable.
I have responded by initiating a petition to convince you to change your minds.
That petition reads as follows:
“ Dear Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure,The news that your Ministry has decided to unilaterally impose the following changes to Main Street in the District of North Vancouver leading east to the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge:
To close the dedicated lane for eastbound traffic through to Dollarton and Seymour
To dedicate both eastbound lanes to the perpetual and exhaustive bridge congestion.
This will have a profoundly negative impact on:
All residents who live and work east of the Bridgehead.
The Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations
The Main Street commercial sector
And the important commercial traffic ingressing and egressing the Port Facilities in the area.
We people of Seymour recall well the mayhem unleashed upon us in 1995 when you resurfaced the Ironworkers Bridge and it was taking 3-4 hours to transit from the central North Shore to Seymour - even without wanting to use the Bridge.
Please: STOP THIS NOW. Listen to District of North Vancouver Council and Staff and we, the people.”
I write to you at this time to report to you that in only 24 hours we have garnered over 1,000 signatures. We have not used boosted posts, advertising or pretty much anything other than Facebook to circulate this. We have not posted it to Twitter/X which would reach far but would engage many many people without a vested interest in our community.
Your move has already affected the election and will most surely do so unless you recant your direction. I implore you to reconsider this direction now. To engage with our Mayor and disavow this decision before more damage is done.
I will continue to pursue this petition as I am seeking to enfranchise the citizen-voters who have been dis-enfranchised by the ill-considered timing of this move.
If you wish to reach me, you have my email and my cell number is <removed here> It is preferable of course if you contact Mayor Mike Little.
I will even go so far as to offer some words you may choose to convey:
“The person(s) who initiated this decision exceeded their mandate, the Ministry apologizes for the poor timing of this communication and we wish to convey that the Ministry has no plans to eliminate the Main Street lane which is dedicated to flow-through Dollarton Traffic Eastbound”.
It would really be quite easy.
Thank you for your consideration,
Peter Teevan
North Vancouver, BC
Please keep up the momentum everyone! Share this! Let’s get to 5,000 signatures as quick as possible!
