I have continued communications with the trip organizers Ashley and Dawn. Ashley said she would get back to me (after last update) and finally after I sent her two follow up emails she replied: "HI Elise, Thanks for the email. Dean Rendell let me know that she responded to you. Dean Rendell is the Head of Student Services and my supervisor. All future inquires can be made to her directly. Thank you, Ashley" I got an email from Dawn on Feb 10 saying that "After much conversation and review of the most recent information available and ASU and Hawaii's travel policies, we wanted to let you know that we have decided to move forward with the trip with some adjustments. We have also responded to the reporter from the State Press addressing the concerns brought forward. We appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns and materials". No mention of what these changes are exactly. So, I replied asking what they were. I received this short email back the next day: "Elise- We will be holding a pre-trip meeting with participants to share the history of Hawaii and its people and discuss an article that they will all read. We are also adding a community service project, as we do with many of our trips -Dawn" (verbatim email from Dawn). Obviously the people in charge don't care about any of the issues I brought up, this petition has only convinced them to add a community service activity. In my view, this is below the bare minimum. Here is a link to the state press story on the topic.
