Our petition officially reached 25,000 signatures yesterday--thank you for all you've done to share this story!

Status update: The ACLU of DE is currently reviewing community feedback and meeting with members of the D/HH community. They have also issued an ASL video here, stating as such. We are heartened that they are showing a willingness to listen, but the video also contains some problematic elements and offers little new information, so we'll continue to advocate and collect signatures and comments until we see news of a complaint retraction.

For further reading about how a hearing-centered legal organization like an ACLU chapter might support the D/HH community without causing harm, the ACLU National Office released a powerful, evidence-based article on language deprivation and the definition of an equitable education for deaf children that is in direct opposition to the declarations out of ACLU-DE and worth a look.

Finally, the author of the petition recognizes that ACLU-DE finds meaningful distinction between filing a "lawsuit," and filing a "complaint" alongside the language, "WE'RE SUING!" As such, the petition has been edited to reflect the preferred language of "complaint" rather than "suit," except in the title to avoid unintentionally altering the hyperlink.

Please continue to sign, share, and comment on this petition while we watch and wait; more voices can only help!
