Update from the Civic Engagement Team

Hello Petition Supporters,

My name is Alexandra, and I'm on the Civic Engagement team at Change.org. Our team works to connect petition starters and supporters with the public officials who have the power to act on the issues you care about. 

The message below is a reply from a city official in the Office of 5th District At Large Councilman Darrell Curls to my outreach. It shows how your support is being shared with local officials and becoming part of the decision-making process:

I have checked with the City Planning and Development Department, and here is the information I received for you.

I see a case in City Planning Commission (CPC): CD-CPC-2026-00137 applied on 9/1/2026. The case hearing is scheduled on CPC at 11/4/2026.

In my previous correspondence, as requested, I’ve provided steps to get this on the historic register.

We sent our compliance team based on complaints received at Douglas Grange Cemetery.

Summary below:

• On field investigation from compliance team (led by Joshua Thomas) reveals that the cemetery has been surveyed and remains untouched based on initial inspection. It does appear that a mulcher has been driven around the property to remove overgrown brush and saplings so that soil samples can be obtained. Contact with a neighbor was made regarding the complaint and was able to provide her with some direction on the property.
• Our team also reached out to the Director of Development for the company (Milhaus) to discuss the open Code case on the property.  The are planning on doing a GPR study of the area in question.  At the current moment, the company doing the GPR has recommended the removal of (3) +/- trees in the area, however they are looking for alternative location to limit impact the site
• At this current time, there is no work that is being done that would require a permit from City Planning & Development or from Water Dept. for the site disturbance. 
• Currently, the nomination for cemetery has not been submitted to the Historic Preservation Commission as of Friday.
   

If you are willing to submit the application for Historic Preservation Commission, please follow the steps below:

1. Log in to Compass KC - https://compasskc.kcmo.org
2.  Click Apply from the toolbar
3. Search keyword “Historic”; the fourth result that auto-populates beneath should be Historic Designation – Landmark; click on it
4. You’ll see the application title and description with a blue Apply button, click the blue Apply button
5. Click the plus sign to add the address
6. Enter the address on the Address & Parcel search line; it will auto-populate as you type. Select the address when you see it
7. Do not type out street directions; just use N, E, S, W
8. Click the check box next to the correct address and then click the blue Add button
9. Click Next
10. Please enter the name of the landmark for which you are requesting review in the description box, then click Next
11. Add any other contacts (must have a Compass KC account) that need access to this plan, then click Next
12. Select “I accept” from the dropdown
13. Fill out any additional information and then click Next
14. Upload the Historic Designation Nomination Form (required) and any other pertinent documents, and then click Next
15. The title of the document(s) must not have any special characters; files must be named using letters and numbers only
16. Review and, if correct, click Submit
