Update
Tree cutting was suspended on Friday evening after a day-long furore raised by green groups and local residents. About ten trees — including four fully grown ones — have already been felled.
A delegation of local activists will shortly meet the Superintendent of Gardens to press for alternatives that can protect the area’s biodiversity. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has marked NatConnect’s emails to the Additional Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs), who has directed the Garden Department to examine the issue urgently.
Our sincere thanks to everyone for the strong support — we have already crossed about 350 signatures. Your collective voice made this immediate pause possible.
But we cannot lower our guard.
Please keep sharing this petition and mobilising as many signatures as possible until the Government comes out with a comprehensive, transparent and pro-environment tree policy.
