Re: The 30% rate price hike for Telus & Public Mobile’s $10 plan customers

Dear Mr. Darren Entwistle,

We are sending you this open letter to express our disappointment as long-time customers of Telus & Public Mobile, and request that you as the CEO and director of Telus Corp, reconsider the decision to impose an unreasonable and unjustified 30% rate hike of $3 on the $10 basic mobile service plan held by your loyal, grandfathered plan subscribers at Telus & Public Mobile. Scheduled to begin on April 28th, 2022, the $3/30-day rate hike is a meaningless pursuit of profitability when compared to your annual compensation, and represents mere 0.005524760% of your daily earnings.

The vast majority of your long-term customers holding onto this grandfathered plan are low-income and/or fixed-income members of society. By this virtue alone, seniors, the disabled, students, single-parents and other marginalized peoples are over-represented in this group of Telus & Public Mobile subscribers. Raising the price to $13/30 days will force many to have to choose between retaining mobile service accessibility and their lifeline to connect with family, friends, public health, government and social support agencies, and decide whether they can afford to eat today, take the transit to medical appointments or buy a week’s worth of pet food.

As the head of Telus and its flanker brands Koodo & Public Mobile, you are proud of Telus’s #1 customer satisfaction rating achieved through a loyal customer base and an extremely-low churn rate. Is a 30% rate hike that’s more than 6 times our current 40-year high inflation rate how Telus rewards their customers who can least afford a price hike but have stayed loyal to Telus over the years? Is this in keeping of the social responsibility that you have strived to achieve while leading Telus Corp and its shareholders to record growth and earnings during your long tenure as the CEO?

If you are to remain committed to Telus’s vision and stellar reputation in the telecommunications industry of caring about and delivering on the promise of providing excellent customer & mobile services based on the needs and desires of your customers regardless of their plan, be it a basic mobile accessibility plan or a technology leading 5G unlimited data plan with all the bells and whistles... then, revoking this unjustifiable 30% rate hike to the $10 plan should be your first order of business after reading our valid concern raised in this letter.

Sincerely,
Telus & Public Mobile customers
