Dear All

As you probably already know, the UK Government is now planning to send British troops to Ukraine - see today’s edition of The Telegraph.

Signalling this to Russia has already had escalatory effects - see the statements by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev published this morning on Sky News that UK soldiers in Ukraine would be a legal NATO target. Accordingly, Medvedev signalled, correctly in my view, that such a move by the UK Government would bring Russia into direct conflict with NATO, i.e. the start of World War Three.

Furthermore, it has been reported that there are plans for the Royal Navy to be sent into the Black Sea.

These UK Government’s actions put the UK directly into Russia’s crosshairs regarding any nuclear escalation of the conflict.

In response to the this escalation of the conflict, I suggest the following:

Those of you who feel strongly that the leaders of the UK are escalating the conflict and putting the security of the UK, and the World, at risk of the Third World War, to send the below text by email to:

  1. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps ; and
  2. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Dear Grant Shapps and Rishi Sunak

By email to:

  • shappsg@parliament.uk
  • rishi.sunak.mp@parliament.uk

Today the British press have reported that the UK Government plans to send British forces into Ukraine, and the Royal Navy into the Black Sea.

This has led to a statement from Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia, that UK forces in Ukraine would be legitimate NATO targets - see Sky News reports. Mr Medvedev has furthermore signalled that actions of the UK Government are bringing World War Three closer.

As the UK Government’s planned actions are escalating the conflict in Ukraine, I call on you to now confirm to the UK public that you will not send UK forces to Ukraine, nor to send the Royal Navy into the Black Sea.

Bear in mind that the actions of Russia in Ukraine should always be understood in context, something which the Western press consistently fails to report on, leading to Western electorates receiving a biased view of the conflict.

Historical context of Russian actions

The context of Russian actions in Ukraine, as stated by the Russian President in a news conference with Sky News prior to 24.02.22, is as follows:

  1. There have been 5 NATO enlargements since 1990 when,  upon unification of Germany, NATO promised not to enlarge even one inch to the East.
  2. NATO expansion to Ukraine was agreed at the Bucharest Summit of 2008 on 3 April 2008, the declaration which stated: “NATO welcomes Ukraine’s and Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations for membership in NATO.  We agreed today that these countries will become members of NATO.” This led Russia to make it known that it would wreck Ukraine before allowing that to happen.
  3. The United States intervention into Ukraine in February 2014 causing a regime change in Kyiv and installation there of an anti-Russian nationalist government. This led directly to Russian intervention to protect ethnic Russians in Crimea and the Donbas, at risk due to the regime change in Kyiv. This event is widely understood by academics to be the real start of the Russo-Ukrainian war.

We call on the UK Government not to forget that  NATO expansion into Ukraine has always been the brightest of red lines for Russia, not only for the Russians closest to Vladimir Putin, the Siloviki, but for all sections of Russian society. This was confirmed in a communique from William J. Burns to Washington, then US ambassador to Moscow and currently CIA Director, published in Wikileaks .

UK Government objectives in Ukraine

We also ask you to be clear as to the UK Government’s objectives in sending UK forces to Ukraine and the Black Sea. If the objectives include defeating Russia in Ukraine, please bear in mind that under Russian law, the Donbas and Crimea are now part of the Russian Federation, and that Russia has a policy for use of nuclear weapons in situations in which the existence of Russia is threatened. Accordingly, the success of UK forces regarding such objectives in Ukraine, could lead directly to World War Three.

Causes of the conflict

As set out in numerous lectures on the causes of the conflict by Professor John Mearsheimer, scholar of International Relations of the University of Chicago, there is not a shred of evidence that Vladimir Putin has imperial ambitions. This is supported by Russia’s acceptance of the Minsk II agreement for the end of the war, and by what Vladimir Putin said in his last attempt, on 17 December 2021, to prevent the Special Military Operation in Ukraine. On the contrary, Prof. Mearsheimer views the United States, as driver of the train, as cause of the train wreck affecting Ukraine and the world. This is due, according to Mearsheimer, to the attempt by the United States to use Ukraine as a bulwark on Russia’s borders to expand the Liberal-democratic World Order.

Despite all the evidence that the cause of the conflict is US regime change in Kyiv, and the expansion of NATO (and to a lesser, but equally significant expansion of the EU) into Ukraine, the Western press continues its biased reporting that the imperial ambitions of Russia are the causes of the conflict.

Accordingly, we have signed a petition on Change.org for Western leaders to stop supporting Ukraine, and call on you to stop escalating the situation.

Kind regards
