'COMPLETE TURNAROUND' Sinn Fein blasted for holding fundraiser at greyhound track despite party stance on industry’s cruelty record

SINN Fein has been blasted for holding a fundraiser at a greyhound track despite the party’s stance on the racing industry’s animal cruelty record.
A Louth section of the party last night held a fundraising event at Dundalk Stadium.
Billed as a ‘Night at the Dogs’ to raise money for Sinn Fein, supporters were asked to pay €20 per ticket.
Sinn Fein TD Imelda Munster, a member of the Cumann organising the event, criticised the greyhound industry for its record on animal cruelty at a recent Public Accounts Committee meeting.
Speaking about RTE’s investigation into the greyhound industry, she said: “It was quite shocking that programme. The sheer scale and magnitude.”
She questioned Bord na gCon, the semi-state body in charge of regulating greyhound racing, and said: “I’m talking about what appears to be widespread animal welfare abuses.”
The RTE doc claimed almost 6,000 greyhounds were killed for not racing fast enough in 2017.
The Irish Council Against Blood Sports called on the party to cancel the event and slammed Louth TD Munster for her “complete turnaround”.
ICABS spokeswoman Aideen Yourell said: “To think after acknowledging the cruelty at the PAC meeting that she would hold a fundraiser at a dog track. It beggars belief.
“It’s a complete turnaround. She knows about the cruelty involved and yet is going ahead to hold a fundraiser at the dogs.
“We are calling on them to please cancel that fundraiser," she said.
Munster did not respond to multiple requests for comments.
