Prominent Surgeon Arrested in Khartoum Today, Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) Calls for His Immediate Release
The Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) reported today that Dr. Alaa Eldin Awad Mohamed Nogoud, a prominent surgeon and pro-democracy activist in Sudan, was arrested by militants at his home in Khartoum earlier today.
Dr. Nogoud, who serves as the Secretary General of the Sudan Association of Surgeons, has been an outspoken critic of Sudanese militants.
According to SAPA, 17 medical professionals have been killed since the start of the conflict. In response to Dr. Nogoud’s arrest, SAPA’s Board of Directors released the following statement:
“We strongly condemn the arrest of our colleague and close friend Dr. Alaa Eldin Mohamed Nogoud by militants in Khartoum today. The deliberate targeting of doctors has been a feature, not a bug, of the horrific crisis, and it must stop now. We are deeply concerned about Dr. Nogoud’s safety and call for his immediate release. We urge the international community to take strong action now to protect medical professionals on the ground.”
