The Issue

To everyone who has ever owned a collection of games on a shelf or even just bought a physical game, Sony is trying to put an end to that. They announced today that they plan to end the production of boxed games on their platform in its entirety from January 2028, and since physical PC games have already died out and Xbox will no doubt follow suit if this goes through this is a very real threat to end physical games on nearly all platforms.

This will affect not only those who cherish owning and collecting physical games, but the second-hand market, small and used game stores and those who game without stable internet that would have problems downloading from digital stores. Physical games also safeguard players against issues like digital stores shutting down and that safer more tangible option is about to dissapear, along with the simple experience of looking at boxed games in a store or gifting games physically.

We understand Sony's wish to streamline their production, but it should decidedly not come at the cost of eliminationg a massive tradition of gaming culture that has been with it from the start.

Sign this petition to let Sony know that we still value physical games and want to keep this tradition alive beyond 2028 and many years after.
