53 ANIMAL-PROTECTION ORGANISATIONS URGE TAMIL NADU CM TO ORDER AN INDEPENDENT PROBE INTO THE FIVE ASSAM ELEPHANTS.
The five elephants have reached Tamil Nadu. But the questions surrounding their transfer remain unanswered. Our fight continues.
People for Cattle in India (PFCI) is grateful to the 53 animal-welfare, wildlife and conservation organisations that have jointly urged the Tamil Nadu Government to investigate the transfer of Durga, Rupsing, Shiva, Hiralal and Bijuli from Assam to Tamil Nadu temples and religious institutions.
In a joint representation to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and other concerned authorities, the organisations have called for an independent examination of the elephants’ ownership, acquisition, transfer documentation, recorded ages, Ownership Certificates and welfare.
The organisations have raised questions about whether the elephants were gifted, donated or purchased, and have requested verification of the original ownership trail and all relevant records. We have also called for an independent veterinary assessment and a pause on further transfers of young elephants from Assam to Tamil Nadu until the circumstances surrounding these five elephants have been examined.
OUR LEGAL FIGHT CONTINUES:
PFCI and others have pursued legal proceedings before the appropriate courts. We have also submitted representations to state and central authorities and continue to seek scrutiny of the elephants’ ownership, provenance, acquisition, welfare and transfer records.
